Overview

This page will walk through how to install and set up MathType.

Remember, the key concepts are always addressed in the text. If you need more info or learn by watching, the videos and resources are great supplements.

Instructions

Go to the Wiris MathType download page.
Choose MathType 7 for Windows.
1. Download for Mac is an option. However, please know that there will be limitations for creating accessible STEM content on a Mac. You will be able to do complete some, but not all, of the steps if you choose to use a Mac. We strongly encourage you to use a Windows computer.
Note: you may need to have administrator credentials to install MathType on a work computer. Consult with your IT department if needed.
Complete the installation process by following the installation prompts.
Open Microsoft Word. You should see MathType as an option in the ribbon that goes horizontally across the top of Word.
1. Please email Krista@inclusiveinstructionaldesign.com if you don't see MathType in Word after the installation process. There may be a setting to adjust in Word.
Select the MathType option. Choose the Inline button on the top left of the MathType option.
You may be prompted to continue the demo or to enter a license key. You also may see a prompt to view the tutorials. We highly recommend you read the section, MathType Tutorials - Working with Microsoft Word.
1. The tutorials are available by selecting the Inline button. This brings up the MathType dialog box. Within that dialog box, there is a Help navigation. Under that, choose MathType Tutorial.

Inline Equation

Inserts an equation inline with your text. An inline equation becomes part of your paragraph and moves with the text when you add or delete text. This is an example of an inline equation: $a^{2} + b^{2} = c^{2}$ .

Display Equation

Inserts an equation below the current line of text, like this one:

$x = \frac{- b \pm \sqrt{b^{2} - 4 a c}}{2 a}$

When MathType inserts a display equation, it centers the equation on the line, and places the cursor on the line below the equation, so that when you close MathType, you’re ready to continue typing.
